...This refers to a painting depicting four old men who retired to Shangshan (Shang County, Shaanxi Province) to escape the chaos of the late Qin Dynasty in China. The Four Haos were Duke of Dongyuan, Duke of Xiahuang, Master Rokuri, and Kiriji, and were so named because they all had white beards and eyebrows. They were taken up as the subject of ink-wash portraits, and many works on them were produced in Japan, which was influenced by China, from the Muromachi period to the Edo period....
