A seaport city on the Tyrrhenian Sea in Liguria, northern Italy. Population 99,863 (1994). Italy's main naval base, where ships and weapons are manufactured. In the second half of the 13th century, many Papists who fled Genoa settled in the city, and in 1274 it came under the control of the Republic of Genoa. In the 15th century it flourished as a commercial and naval center. During World War II, much of the city was bombed and destroyed.
