Karako
〘Noun〙① A child with Chinese-style clothing and hairstyle. It is often seen in the "Karako Asobi no E" (Pictures of Chinese Children Playing ) that depict children playing beside the monk Hotei. ※Tenrihon Kyogen, Suehirogi (late Muromachi period - early modern period) "Spring and autumn flowers are drawn, and on one side is a karako, and both are unrefined pictures." ※Kibyoushi, Kaneko Sensei Zoukamu (1794) "It looks like the head of a child for a memorial service is attached to the body of a karako." ② Abbreviation of "karakomage ( Chinese child topknot )." ※Gokan, Shohonsei (1815-31) Juhen "Nowadays, even if you are just a little bit out of place, the back sash is also three ginkgo trees, and the kimono is tied with a shinobuka or karako, making it look like an amateur." ③ Hairstyle for infants. A method of shaving the hair on the top and sides of the head as in ①, leaving some hair on the top and sides of the head. In the early modern period, it was mainly performed on young children. ※Zappai, Naniwa Souvenir (1844) "Praised, he strokes down the Karako (Chinese child) with a drumstick." ④ Abbreviation of "Karako Ningyo (Chinese child doll)."

〘名〙① 中国風の衣装や髪形をしている子ども。布袋(ほてい)和尚の傍で遊び戯れる子どもたちの様子を描く、「唐子遊びの絵」と言われるものなどに多く見られる。※天理本狂言・末広がり(室町末‐近世初)「春秋の花づくしをかいたり、又一方にはからこ、いづれもざれた絵などをかくをざれ絵」※黄表紙・金々先生造化夢(1794)「唐児(カラコ)の胴へ練供養の稚児(ちご)の首をすげたやうだ」② 「からこまげ(唐子髷)」の略。※合巻・正本製(1815‐31)拾編「今では一寸の他所出にも、うしろ帯も三ツ銀杏、しのぶかからこか結びかみ、素人と見せる其中へ」③ 幼児の髪形。①のように頭の上や左右に毛を一部残して剃る方法。近世、主に幼児に行なわれた。※雑俳・なには土産(1844)「ほめられて・撥で唐子(カラコ)を撫下ろし」④ 「からこにんぎょう(唐子人形)」の略。
