Achaeans - Achaioi

Historically, the term was used to refer to the Greeks of the Mycenaean period, who developed a highly advanced culture from around the 16th century BC. There is a theory that the Achaeans were found in Hittite and Egyptian documents from the 14th to 12th centuries BC under the names Aiyavā and Ekesh, but this is not certain. In Homer's epics, the term Achaeans is used exclusively as a general term for the Greeks. According to legend, after the Dorian invasion, some of them migrated to Asia Minor near Lesbos and to Cyprus. In historical times, they were known as the inhabitants of the area between Elis in the west and Sicyon in the northeast in the southeastern part of Thessaly and the northern part of the Peloponnese. During the Greek colonial period (8th to 6th centuries BC), they mainly colonized southern Italy and founded important cities such as Sybaris and Croton. Although they did not play a major role in the early history of the Greek Empire, they exerted a great influence in the Greek world as the central power of the Achaean League in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. After 146 BC, they came under Roman rule, along with other Greeks.

歴史的には、紀元前16世紀ごろよりきわめて高度な文化を発展させたミケーネ時代のギリシア人の呼称。すでに前14～前12世紀のヒッタイトやエジプトの文書にAiyavā，Ekeshの名称でアカイア人がみいだされるとの説もあるが、さだかでない。ホメロスの叙事詩では、アカイア人という呼称はもっぱらギリシア人の総称の一つとして用いられている。伝説によると、彼らは、ドーリア人の侵入後、一部はレスボス島近辺の小アジア方面やキプロス島などに移住した。歴史時代には、テッサリアの南東部やペロポネソス半島北部の、西はエリス、北東はシキオンの間の地方の住民として知られていた。ギリシアの植民時代（前8～前6世紀）おもに南イタリアに植民し、シバリスやクロトンなどの重要都市を設立した。このほか、彼らは、初期の歴史では大きな役割を果たさなかったが、前3～前2世紀にはアカイア同盟の中心勢力としてギリシア世界で大きな影響力を発揮した。前146年以降、他のギリシア人と同様にローマの支配下に入った。
