A peasant uprising that began in the Gunnai region of Kai Province (around Tsuru County) in 1836 and spread throughout Kai Province. It is also known as the Kai Province Uprising or Tenpo Disturbance. The poor harvest since 1833 caused serious problems such as rising rice prices in the Gunnai region, and on August 15, 1836, a rice shop in Yamura (present-day Tsuru City, Yamanashi Prefecture) was destroyed. On the 21st of the same month, the rebels in Gunnai led by Jizaemon (also known as Takeshichi) of Shimowada Village (present-day Otsuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture) advanced into the Kuninaka region (around the Kofu Basin), and poor farmers from the Kuninaka region joined in, spreading the disturbance throughout Kai Province. The defenses of the Kofu duty station and the magistrate's office were rendered ineffective, and the revolt was finally put down by the deployment of soldiers from the Shinano Takato Domain. About 300 houses were destroyed and about 630 people were captured. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
