A prefecture in southern Greece, in the northern part of the Peloponnese. It faces the Gulf of Patras and the Gulf of Corinth. Its capital is Patras. Its area is 3,271 square kilometers, and its population is 328,600 (2003 estimate). Its main products are grapes, wine, grains, citrus fruits and other fruits. Sheep farming is also popular. After the historical period of ancient Greece, the southern part of the Thessaly Peninsula was also called Achaea. In 280 BC, the various city-states in this region formed the Achaean League, which influenced the political situation in Hellenistic Greece, but in 146 BC it came under direct control of Rome.
