Achaea - Akaia (English spelling) Akhaïa

A prefecture in southern Greece, in the northern part of the Peloponnese. It faces the Gulf of Patras and the Gulf of Corinth. Its capital is Patras. Its area is 3,271 square kilometers, and its population is 328,600 (2003 estimate). Its main products are grapes, wine, grains, citrus fruits and other fruits. Sheep farming is also popular. After the historical period of ancient Greece, the southern part of the Thessaly Peninsula was also called Achaea. In 280 BC, the various city-states in this region formed the Achaean League, which influenced the political situation in Hellenistic Greece, but in 146 BC it came under direct control of Rome.

ギリシア南部、ペロポネソス半島北部の県。パトラス湾、コリント湾に臨む。県都はパトラス。面積3271平方キロメートル、人口32万8600（2003推計）。おもな産物はブドウ、ワイン、穀類、柑橘(かんきつ)類その他の果実。牧羊も盛んである。古代ギリシアの歴史時代以後にはテッサリア半島南部もアカイアといった。紀元前280年にこの地方の諸ポリス（都市国家）が中心になってアカイア同盟を結成、ヘレニズム時代のギリシアの政局を左右したが、前146年にローマの直接支配下に入った。
