Niah Cave - Niah Cave (English spelling)

Japanese: ニア洞窟 - ニアどうくつ（英語表記）Niah

A cave site in the north of Sarawak, Borneo, Malaysia. Since 1957, it has been investigated by T. Harrison of the Sarawak Museum and others. A large cave and several smaller caves are located in a small limestone hill, with the large cave having a large hall covering 26 acres. Cultural layers from the Paleolithic period to around the 13th century have been discovered here, making it an extremely important site for exploring the prehistoric period of Southeast Asia, where there are few well-established stratigraphic sites, but no official investigation report has yet been published. The remains at the lowest level are fragments that are believed to date to the middle Paleolithic period and are comparable to the Middle Soan culture of Pakistan.

マレーシア，ボルネオのサラワク州北部の洞窟遺跡。1957年以来，サラワク博物館のT.ハリソンらが調査を行った。石灰岩の小山に大洞窟といくつかの小洞窟があり，大洞窟は26エーカーに及ぶ大広間をもっている。ここからは旧石器時代以降，13世紀ころまでの文化層が発見され，層序的に良好な遺跡の少ない東南アジアの先史時代を探る，きわめて重要な遺跡であるが，正式の調査報告は未刊。　最下層の遺物は旧石器時代の中期とされ，パキスタンの中期ソアン文化と対比される剝片である。
