Mazowsze (English spelling)
Mazovia in English. The name of the region in central-eastern Poland, centered on Warsaw and Ciechanów in the lowlands of the middle reaches of the Wisła River. It includes Płock in the west, Grzycec in the south, and Białystok in the east. It became part of Poland in the first half of the 10th century, and after the death of Bolesław III (1102-1138), it became one of the principalities created by his sons, and in the 13th and 14th centuries the principality was further divided by inheritance. In 1526, the line of Mazowieckie dukes died out, and the region became part of the Kingdom of Poland, and in 1596 Warsaw replaced Kraków as its capital. After the Third Partition of Poland, it was occupied by Prussia from 1796 to 1806, and from 1797 to 1806 it was part of the Duchy of Warsaw, and from 1798 to 1815 it was the center of the Russian "Kingdom of Poland" until the restoration of Poland in 1918, and played a leading role in the independence movement. Even after the nation was rebuilt, this region's leadership has been very strong.
