Japan's first public psychiatric hospital. In 1875, Kyoto Prefecture planned to establish a psychiatric hospital as a way to improve the treatment of mentally ill people who relied on religious services at Iwakura Daiunji Temple. Akashi Hirotaka and others from Kyoto Prefectural Medical Hospital, with the cooperation of Higashiyama Tenka, former head priest of Zenrinji Temple, established a temporary insane asylum within the abbot's chambers of Nanzenji Temple to accommodate patients from Iwakura Daiunji Temple and other temples. The hospital opened on July 25th of the same year, with Majima Toshitami as its first director. However, due to financial difficulties, it closed in October 1882.
