A city in Herfordshire, north of London, England. Population 128,000 (1993). Located on a hill near the ruins of the Roman city of Verulamium. It is named after the place where the early Christian evangelist Alban was martyred, and is the site of St. Albans Cathedral. It was an important political and religious city from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Middle Ages, and its abbey produced many learned monks. It was attacked by peasants during Wat Tyler's rebellion in 1381, and was the site of two battles during the Wars of the Roses, in 1455 and 1461.
