Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East

…It is one of the regional economic commissions, and was established in March 1947. It was originally called the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE, an abbreviation for Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East). It was renamed ESCAP in 1974 because the Pacific islands joined and because it placed emphasis on social development as well as economic issues. ESCAP's original purpose was the postwar reconstruction of Asia, but in recent years its main mission has been to collect statistics and information, conduct research, and make recommendations to the Economic and Social Council and to the countries concerned in order to promote economic development in the Asia-Pacific region and economic cooperation between countries in the region and with other regions. …
