Greek scholar. He is the most extensive scholar of classical Greek literature of the late Byzantine period. He inherited the classical studies of Planudes, Thomas Magister, and Moscopoulos, and left his mark on the textual criticism of ancient Greek poets, especially Pindar, Aeschylus, and Sophocles, and on the study of metrical rhythm. His opinions on the correction of misrepresentations in the original texts are not highly regarded, but he occasionally provides excellent corrective readings.
