A Brazilian distilled alcoholic drink, also called pinga. It is made by fermenting and distilling sugarcane juice. It is similar to rum, but is heavier. It was made as a by-product of the sugar industry in Brazil, and is popular as the national drink. A caipirinha is made by pouring cachaça and sugar into a large glass with several crushed limes and crushed ice. Sometimes lemon juice is used instead of lime, and sometimes no sugar is added.
