A Russian family of industrialists and bankers. Born to peasant origins in Kaluga Province. In the mid-19th century, the family owned several small textile factories, but in 1869 they acquired a cotton spinning mill. They also engaged in credit business, acquiring the Kharkov Land Bank in 1900. In 1902 they founded the Ryabushinsky Brothers Bank, which they reorganized into the Moscow Bank in 1912. During World War I, the family expanded into forestry and metalworking, becoming a tycoon-type conglomerate. The last head of the family, Pavel Pavlovich Ryabushinskii (1871-1924), was a representative figure of the leftward shift of the bourgeoisie, along with Konovalov. He published the newspaper Russian Morning and served as chairman of the Moscow War Industrial Committee. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
