AM Cassandre

French poster designer and painter. His real name was Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron. He was born in Kharkov, Russia, and settled in Paris from 1915. His innovative geometric compositions brought a breath of fresh air to the French poster world from the 1920s to the 1930s. His techniques are said to be in the style of cubism or purism, but what is significant is that he eliminated the "painterly" element from posters and created a unique world for posters. He is known not only for his compositional style, but also for his eccentric ideas, such as his poster for a Western liquor company (1932). He worked in the United States from 1936 to 1938, but after returning to Japan he abandoned his career as a poster artist and devoted himself to painting and stage sets.
