Japanese: せん断(剪断) - せんだん（英語表記）shearing

A processing method for cutting metal materials into the desired shape, where the force applied to the material and the stress generated in the material are parallel to the surface to be cut. Materials are cut using a device that captures and cuts the material by the relative motion of two blades, one above the other, a device where one is shaped like a blade and the other is a die, or a device where neither tool is so rigid that it can be called a blade, and the relative motion between two tools is sufficient to cut the material. The relative motion can be achieved in a scissors-like shape, a paper cutter-like shape, a piston and cylinder-like shape, or a shape where the blade is attached to a rotating base and is synchronized with a moving object.

金属材料を目的の形状に切断する加工法で，材料に加える力と材料に生ずる応力とが切断しようとする面に平行である場合をいう。上下の2枚の刃の相対運動により材料をとらえて切る装置，一方が刃の形をしており，他方がダイスとなっている装置，あるいは両方が刃とは呼べない剛性の高い工具どうしの相対運動などによって材料が切断される。相対運動のさせ方としては，はさみのような形，紙切り(カッター)のような形，ピストンとシリンダーのような形，回転する基盤に刃がついていて，走行する物体と同期させる形などがある。
