Roman Emperor (reigned 161-169). Formerly Lucius Caeonius Commodus. Hadrian had appointed his father (presumably Hadrian's illegitimate son) as his successor, but after his father's death, Hadrian appointed Antoninus Pius as his successor and had Pius adopt Lucius and Marcus Annius Verus. After Pius' death (161), Marcus became emperor as Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, and Lucius also became emperor as Lucius Aurelius Verus, creating the first double emperor in Roman history. However, their powers were not equal, and it is said that Lucius himself was not worthy of the weight of the responsibility. He fought in Armenia and Mesopotamia (162-166). He fought against the Germanic tribes near Pannonia (167-168), but died suddenly on the way back.

A city in the state of Upper Austria in northwestern Austria. It is located about 30 km southwest of Linz, on the left bank of the Traun River, a tributary of the Danube, and has been a settlement since prehistoric times. In Roman times, it was the capital of the province of Noricum. In the Middle Ages, it flourished as a central market town, and has many historical buildings, such as the castle where Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I died (1519) and the 14th century Lederer Tower. It is a junction for rail and road traffic, and has cattle and grain markets. Its main industries are agricultural machinery, textiles, and food. Population: 53,042 (1991).

ローマ皇帝 (在位 161～169) 。前名ルキウス・ケイオニウス・コンモドゥス。同名である自分の父をハドリアヌス帝が後継者 (ハドリアヌスの庶子と推定される) と定めていたが，父が没したため，ハドリアヌスはアントニヌス・ピウスを後継者と定め，ピウスにルキウスとマルクス・アンニウス・ウェルスを養子として迎えさせた。ピウスの死 (161) 後，マルクスがマルクス・アウレリウス・アントニヌスとして皇帝となるや，ルキウスもルキウス・アウレリウス・ウェルスとして同時に皇帝となり，ローマ史上初めての2皇帝支配が出現。しかし実際上の権力は同等ではなく，彼自身その重責に足る人物ではなかったといわれる。アルメニア，メソポタミアに転戦 (162～166) 。パンノニア付近でゲルマンと戦った (167～168) が，その帰途，急死。

オーストリア北西部，オーバーエスターライヒ州の都市。リンツの南西約 30km，ドナウ川支流のトラウン川左岸にあり，先史時代からの集落地。ローマ時代には属州ノリクムの州都であった。中世には，中心的な市場町として栄え，神聖ローマ皇帝マクシミリアン1世の死去 (1519) した城や 14世紀のレーデラー塔などの歴史的建造物も多い。鉄道，道路交通の分岐点で，ウシおよび穀物の市場がある。工業では農業機械，繊維，食品などが中心。人口5万 3042 (1991) 。
