...Its distribution is wide and polymorphic, but several species have differentiated in the peripheral areas. Closely related species include H. fauriei F.Maek., which is distributed in the beech zone from the Chubu region to the north, H. kurohimekanaoi, which is distributed in Toyama Prefecture on the Sea of Japan side, H. megacalyx F.Maek., which is distributed in Yamagata Prefecture, Niigata Prefecture, and northern Nagano Prefecture, and H. savatieri F.Maek., which is distributed from Hakone to Izu on the Pacific side. In China, several species of the genus are used for medicinal purposes like the Chinese rhododendrons, but their medicinal properties are considered to be inferior.
