A mineral whose main components are silicon (Si) and oxygen (O), it is a major constituent mineral of rocks. Its chemical composition is such that the hydrogen atoms of various silicic acids are replaced with various metal atoms. The basic structure of silicate minerals is a SiO ₄ regular tetrahedron consisting of one silicon atom surrounded by four oxygen atoms. Silicate minerals are classified into six types based on the way in which this SiO ₄ tetrahedron is bonded. The figure below shows the names of these six types of silicate minerals, the bonding patterns of the SiO ₄ tetrahedrons, and representative examples.

ケイ素Siと酸素Oを主成分とする鉱物で，岩石の主要構成鉱物である。各種のケイ酸の水素原子を種々の金属原子で置き換えた化学組成を有する。ケイ酸塩鉱物は，ケイ素原子1個とそれを取り囲む酸素原子4個からなるSiO₄正四面体がその構造の基本になっている。このSiO₄四面体の結合の仕方によってケイ酸塩鉱物は6種類に分類される。図にこれら6種類のケイ酸塩鉱物の名称，SiO₄四面体の結合様式および代表的な例を示す。
