A city in central Miyagi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. In 1987, Miyagi Town was incorporated, and in 1988, Izumi City and Akiu Town were incorporated. In 1989, it became a city designated by government ordinance, with five districts established: Aoba, Miyagino, Wakabayashi, Taihaku, and Izumi. It faces Sendai Bay to the east, occupies the central Sennan Plain, and the city is located on the terraces of the Hirose River. The Tohoku Shinkansen, Tohoku Main Line, Senzan Line, and Senseki Line branch off from it, and the Tohoku Expressway also runs through it. In the early modern period, it flourished as a castle town of the Date clan, which had a fief of 620,000 koku. In 1872, it became the prefectural capital of Miyagi Prefecture, and with a concentration of local government offices and many cultural institutions, such as Tohoku University, it is the political, economic, and cultural center of the Tohoku region. Although a large area was destroyed in the air raids of World War II, the city was quickly rebuilt after the war, and a grid-like layout based on the layout of the castle town was formed. There is a lot of greenery, and it is called "the city of forests". In 1987, the municipal subway was opened. Although it has a strong tendency to be a consumer city, Nagamachi, Odawara, Hakusan, etc. are industrial districts, and the new Sendai Port was built as part of the New Industrial City Plan designated in 1964. The value of manufactured goods shipped was 736.7 billion yen (2003), making it the largest industrial city in the Tohoku region. The plains are filled with rice paddies, and vegetable cultivation is also thriving. There are the remains of Aoba Castle, the remains of Mutsu Kokubunji Temple (historic sites), Yagiyama, and Tsutsujigaoka Parks, and the Tanabata Festival is famous as one of the three major festivals in the Tohoku region. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 786.30 km 2 . 1,045,986 people (2010). → Related topics Sendai [Station] | Sendai Trust Tower | Miyagi [Prefecture] | Miyagi University of Education Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
