A bird of the family Columbiformes (illustration). Total length is about 33 cm. Its plumage is slightly dark green above, bright green-yellow from the face to the chest, and whitish underside. The male's wing coverts are reddish-brown. Its beak is blue, and its legs are dark red. It is found in Japan, southern China, Taiwan, and northern Vietnam, and lives in dense forests of broad-leaved trees in mountainous areas. In Japan, it breeds from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and those from the north migrate south in winter. It is often seen in Shikoku, Kyushu, and other areas in winter. Its diet is mostly plant matter, such as nuts and grass seeds.

ハト目ハト科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約33cm。羽色は上面はやや暗い緑色で，顔から胸は明るい緑黄色，腹は白っぽい。雄は翼の雨覆羽が赤褐色をしている。くちばしは青色で，脚は暗赤色。日本，中国南部，台湾，ベトナム北部に分布し，山地の広葉樹のよく茂った林にすむ。日本では北海道から九州までで繁殖し，北方のものは冬季には南へ渡る。四国，九州などでは冬に多く見られる。餌はほとんど植物質で，木の実，草の種子などである。
