This old city occupies the Kawauchi Plain downstream of the Kawauchi River in the western part of Kagoshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. It was established long ago as the center of northern Satsuma, and Satsuma Kokubunji Temple was established there. The city center faces the Kawauchi River, and is served by the Kyushu Shinkansen, Kagoshima Main Line, Hisatsu Orange Railway, and National Route 3. It was originally an agricultural city that cultivated sweet potatoes, tobacco, and vegetables such as scallions, and raised dairy cows, but after the port was developed, paper mills and other factories were built, and the development of coastal industrial areas progressed, and a nuclear power plant was also built. In recent years, industrial development has also been taking place inland, with IC-related factories moving in. There is the remains of the Satsuma Kokubunji Pagoda (historic site), and the sand dunes near the mouth of the Kawauchi River are a scenic spot. In October 2004, the towns of Hiwaki, Iriki, Togo, Kidoin, Sato, Kamikoshiki, Shimokoshiki, and Kashima merged to form the city of Satsuma-Sendai. Area: 265.44 ^km2 . Population: 73,067 (2003).

鹿児島県西部，川内川下流の川内平野を占める旧市。1940年市制。北薩摩の中心として古くから開け，薩摩国分寺が置かれた。中心市街は川内川に臨み，九州新幹線，鹿児島本線，肥薩おれんじ鉄道，国道３号線が通じる。サツマイモ，タバコのほかラッキョウなどの野菜栽培，乳牛飼育を営む農業都市であったが，港湾整備後製紙工場などが立地し臨海工業地の造成が進み，原子力発電所も立地する。近年はIC関連工場が進出するなど内陸部での工業開発も行われる。薩摩国分寺塔跡（史跡）があり，川内川河口付近の砂丘は景勝地。2004年10月薩摩郡樋脇町，入来町，東郷町，祁答院町，里村，上甑村，下甑村，鹿島村と合併し市制，薩摩川内市となる。265.44km²。７万3067人（2003）。
