German musicologist. After studying theology and classical philology at the University of Göttingen, he taught Greek and Latin at a high school, and from 1875 he was professor of music history at the University of Berlin, where he mentored outstanding musicologists such as M. Friedländer, and also served as rector of the Berlin University of Music. His research ranged from the early Middle Ages to the Romantic period, but his main focus was on 17th- and 18th-century German church music, and he was characterized by precise textual criticism employing the methods of classical philology, and classical evaluation of works influenced by his close friend Brahms.

ドイツの音楽学者。ゲッティンゲン大学で神学と古典文献学を修めたのち，高等学校のギリシア語･ラテン語教師をへて，1875年からベルリン大学の音楽史教授としてM.フリートレンダーらのすぐれた音楽学者を育て，同時にベルリン音楽大学学長も兼任した。研究領域は中世初期からロマン派にまで及んだが，中心は17～18世紀のドイツ教会音楽にあり，古典文献学の方法を採用した精密な原典批判と，親友であったブラームスの影響による古典主義的な作品評価を特色としている。
