1841‐94 German musicologist. After studying theology and classical philology at the University of Göttingen, he taught Greek and Latin at a high school, and from 1875 he was professor of music history at the University of Berlin, where he mentored outstanding musicologists such as M. Friedländer, and also served as rector of the Berlin University of Music. His research ranged from the early Middle Ages to the Romantic period, but his main focus was on 17th- and 18th-century German church music, and he was characterized by precise textual criticism employing the methods of classical philology, and classical evaluation of works influenced by his close friend Brahms.
