A calcareous alga of the Chlorophyte family, M. velebitana, which flourished in the warm, extremely shallow waters of the Tethys Ocean during the Permian Period of the Paleozoic Era, and is one of the representative extinct genera. The type species M. velebitana is found in the Velebit Mountains of Yugoslavia. It has a morphology similar to that of the extant genus M. velebitana, with spherical internodes connected in a string. Regular vegetative branches grow around a vertical central axis, and calcium carbonate is deposited between the branches. The gametosacs were not formed at the ends of the branches as in M. velebitana, and were probably located inside the central axis. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
模式種M.velebitanaはユーゴのベレビト山地産。
