Fixed plate - Joban

A table with a flat surface that serves as a reference for inspection, marking, and assembly. The precision, shape, size, and material vary depending on the purpose of use. For example, there are box-shaped surface plates used for centering and finishing in general machine factories, precision surface plates used for inspection, grinding surface plates used as a reference when finishing surface plates and precision flat surfaces, and assembly surface plates used for installing machines and equipment. They are often made of cast iron, as they require ease of molding, vibration damping, and lubricity. Those that do not require precision are simply finished with a planing machine, but precise ones are finished by scraping. Precision surface plates do not like to change over time, so they are thoroughly heat-treated or naturally aged (left in the elements for a long period of time to remove residual stress) after casting and rough finishing.

検査、けがき、および組立ての基準となる平坦(へいたん)面をもつ台。使用目的によって精度、形状、大きさ、材質などが異なる。たとえば、一般の機械工場において芯(しん)出しおよび仕上げ用として用いられる箱形定盤、検査用として用いられる精密定盤、定盤や精密平面の仕上げ加工時の基準として用いられるすり合せ定盤、機械・機器の据付け用として用いられる組立用定盤などがある。材質は、成形の容易さ、振動の減衰性、潤滑性などを要するので鋳鉄でつくられることが多い。精度を要さないものは平削り盤で仕上げただけであるが、精密なものはきさげ仕上げを施す。また精密定盤は経年変化を嫌うので、鋳造後および荒仕上げ後に十分な熱処理もしくは自然枯らし（長期間、自然界に放置して、残留応力を除去すること）を行う。
