A perennial grass of the grass family (APG classification: Gramineae). Its stems and leaves are used as fodder, and it is commonly called timothy. The leaves are 10-60 cm long, 5-10 mm wide, and have rough edges. The stems are upright, about 1 m tall, and swell at the base to form bulbs. In early summer, the tips of the stems produce ears. The ears are cylindrical with dense spikelets, 3-10 cm long, slightly less than 1 cm in diameter, and pale green in color. It is native to the area from Europe to Siberia, preferring cool climates. It was introduced to Japan in the early Meiji period, and is mostly cultivated in Hokkaido. Recently, it has become wild in fields in various places. It prefers extremely humid conditions when germinating, and can germinate even in water. When the seeds are given water, they germinate relatively uniformly, and are bright green and beautiful. It is called Kinuitosou (silk grass) and is used for landscapes. [Hoshikawa Kiyochika August 20, 2019] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
