Senjokei

This valley is located in the center of Shimane Prefecture, on the border between Gotsu City and Onan Town, Ochi County. It is also written as Senjokei. The Hiwa River, which flows into the Hachinohe River, a tributary of the Gono River, cuts through the quartz trachyte to create a 5-kilometer gorge, which has been designated as a national scenic spot. There are over 20 waterfalls formed by the erosion and rejuvenation of the main stream, the Gono River. The hard rock and the quartz trachyte with its many plate-like and square joints create steep waterfalls that display the characteristics of a deep valley. Among them, Shirafuji Falls is a 40-meter waterfall. There is a walking path along the gorge, and the scenery is particularly beautiful during the autumn foliage season.

島根県中央部、江津(ごうつ)市と邑智(おおち)郡邑南(おおなん)町の境界にある渓谷。千畳渓とも書く。江の川(ごうのかわ)の支流八戸(やと)川に合流する日和(ひわ)川が石英粗面岩を貫穿(かんせん)して5キロメートルにわたる峡谷をつくり、国の名勝に指定されている。本流である江の川の侵食回春の影響を受けて形成された20余の滝がある。岩質が堅く、板状や方状節理の多い石英粗面岩が急な瀑布(ばくふ)をつくり、深谷の特色を発揮している。なかでも白藤滝は40メートルに及ぶ瀑布である。峡谷に沿って遊歩道があり、とくに紅葉時の景観はすばらしい。
