A post station in the province of Totomi from the late ancient period to the Middle Ages. It is identified with the current Ikeda in Toyoda-cho, Shizuoka Prefecture (currently Iwata City). It was the center of Ikeda Manor, the domain of Matsuo Shrine in Yamashiro Province (currently Matsuo Taisha Shrine in Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto City), and is thought to have been a ferry terminal on the Tenryu River as well as the residence of the manor official. According to the entry for December 21, 1190 in the Azuma Kagami, Minamoto no Yoritomo stayed here on his way back from Kyoto. Its name appears in military chronicles such as The Tale of the Heike and travel writings such as The Kaido-ki, and it was a post station throughout the Middle Ages, but it flourished most from the end of the Heian period to the Kamakura period. It was also known for having many courtesans, and the story of Taira Munemori and the daughter of the inn's headmaster, Kumano, is famous in the Noh play Kumano. It is said that Minamoto no Noriyori's mother was also a courtesan at this post station. It was once located on the west bank of the Tenryu River, but was moved to the east bank due to changes in the river course. Tokugawa Ieyasu placed great importance on the ferry terminal and granted numerous privileges to the ferryman, but it fell into decline in the early modern period. During the Edo period, it became Ikeda Village, Toyoda County, Totomi Province. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
