A city at the southern end of Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It is located on the Tama Hills and faces Sagamihara to the west. Honmachida flourished as a market town during the Edo period, but now the city is centered around Haramachida, where the Yokohama Line, which opened at the end of the Meiji period, and the Odakyu Electric Railway, which opened in the early Showa period, intersect. As a satellite city of the metropolitan area, large housing complexes have been developed since the 1960s, and the city has become a rapidly residential area. It is home to Tamagawa Gakuen and J. F. Oberlin Gakuen.
