Japanese: 町田[市] - まちだ

A city at the southern end of Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It is located on the Tama Hills and faces Sagamihara to the west. Honmachida flourished as a market town during the Edo period, but now the city is centered around Haramachida, where the Yokohama Line, which opened at the end of the Meiji period, and the Odakyu Electric Railway, which opened in the early Showa period, intersect. As a satellite city of the metropolitan area, large housing complexes have been developed since the 1960s, and the city has become a rapidly residential area. It is home to Tamagawa Gakuen and J. F. Oberlin Gakuen. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 71.80 ^km2 . 426,987 people (2010).

東京都南端の市。1958年市制。多摩丘陵上にあり，西は相模原に臨む。江戸時代は本町田が市場町として栄えたが，現在は明治末に開通の横浜線と昭和初期に開通の小田急電鉄が交差する原町田が中心。首都圏の衛星都市として1960年代から大規模団地が造成され，住宅地化が著しい。玉川学園，桜美林学園などがある。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。71.80km²。42万6987人（2010）。
