?-1044 King of the Chola dynasty of southern India. Reigned 1016-44. After two years of joint rule with his father, Rajaraja I, he ascended to the throne and continued to exert his influence both in India and abroad for about 30 years. Following in the footsteps of his predecessor, he expanded his territory, conquering Kerala and Ceylon in the south. He also invaded the southern Chalukya dynasty in the north, and entered Bengal from the Kalinga Kingdom. In 1023, he defeated its king, Mahipala, and reached the banks of the Ganges. As a result, the king called himself Gangaikonda (he who had taken possession of the Ganges) and called the new capital he built in the lower Caveri basin Gangaikondacholapuram (the capital of the Chola who had taken possession of the Ganges).
