The Former Nine Years' War
In the late Heian period, Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and Yoshiie waged a campaign to subjugate the Abe clan, the head of the Mutsu prisoners of war. Abe Yorimitsu (Yoritoki), who ruled over six districts in Mutsu at the time, did not pay tribute to the provincial government or perform forced labor, so the governor Fujiwara no Narito and Akita no Suke Taira no Shigenari tried to subjugate him, but failed. In 1051, the Imperial Court appointed Minamoto no Yoriyoshi as the governor of Mutsu and ordered him to pursue and defeat him. Yorimitsu temporarily returned to power, but in 1056, just before the end of Yoriyoshi's term as governor, he rebelled, attacking Yoriyoshi's camp and taking up residence in Kinugawa. Yoriyoshi reappointed him to the position and began a campaign to subjugate the Abe clan, defeating and killing Yorimitsu the following year, but the Abe clan, led by Yorimitsu's son Sadato, remained firmly united, and Yoriyoshi and his men continued to struggle. However, with the support of Dewa prisoners of war, including Mitsuyori Kiyohara and Takenori Kiyohara, they finally defeated Sadato and put down the rebellion in 1562. In 1563, Sadato's younger brother, Munenori, and others were exiled to Iyo.
