…Linguistics is a science that deals with language itself, without being directly related to the historical fate of the people who speak it, and is a part of natural history, and he believed that its study should be based on the methods of natural science. In his large-scale work, “Compendium der vergleichenden Grammatik der indogermanischen Sprachen” (1861-62, 4th edition 1876), published in Weimar, he summarized the research on Indo-European languages (the Indo-European language family) that had begun with F. Bopp, and at the same time, he developed a new attempt to theoretically reconstruct the common root (proto-language) Ursprache of Indo-European languages by searching for the prototype of each form through comparison.
