Kanemaki Jisai - Kanemaki Jisai

A swordsman from the early modern period. He is said to be the teacher of Ito Ittōsai Kagehisa, the founder of the Ittō-ryū style, but his birth, death and personal history are unclear. The Yuishin Ittō-ryū Kotoda Densho records his name as Kanemaki Gaita Michimune, and we know that he had an alternative surname of Gaita, and was known by the names Michimune (also called Michika) and Jisai. His surname also suggests that he was from the prestigious Kanemaki clan of Echizen, but there is no certainty as to which he was. According to the "Shoden of Bugei" and other sources, Michimune learned the Chujo-ryu style from Toda Gorozaemon Seigen (Seigen) and Kurozaemon Kagemasa, and became adept at the Chujo-ryu style of kodachi and the medium dachi techniques that he himself invented. Together with Yamazaki Sakon Shogen and Hasegawa Souki, he was known as one of the "Three Tomita Schools." The schools he taught were called Kanemaki-ryu and Gaita-ryu.

近世初頭の剣術家。一刀流の始祖伊藤一刀斎景久(かげひさ)の師とされる人物であるが、その生没、履歴は明らかではない。唯心一刀流古藤田(ことうだ)伝書には鐘捲外他通宗(とだみちむね)とあり、別姓に外他を称し、名を通宗（通家ともいう）、自斎と号したことがわかる。またその姓から越前(えちぜん)の名家印牧(かねまき)氏の出身とみられるが、そのいずれにあたるか確証がない。『武芸小伝』ほかの諸説をまとめると、通宗は中条(ちゅうじょう)流を富田(とだ)五郎左衛門清源(せいげん)（勢源）および九郎左衛門景政(かげまさ)に学び、中条流の小太刀と自らくふう考案した中太刀の技法に精妙を得、山崎左近将監(さこんしょうげん)、長谷川宗喜(はせがわそうき)とあわせて「富田の三家」と称された。その門流を鐘捲流、外他流という。
