Atyrau (English spelling)

Japanese: アトゥラウ（英語表記）Atyrau

It is the capital of Atyrau Oblast in western Kazakhstan. It is a port city located on the northern shore of the Caspian Sea, in the delta at the mouth of the Ural River. Until 1992 it was called Guryev. In the mid-17th century Mikhail Guryev founded a fishing settlement, which soon became a Ural Cossack fortress. During the Soviet era, fishing and trade were the main economic activities. Later, industries such as oil refining, petrochemicals, canning, and ship repair were also established. There is a branch of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences, as well as a pedagogical university, museums, and theaters. It is connected to Orsk in Russia by rail. Population: 146,900 (1995 estimate).
