It is the capital of Atyrau Oblast in western Kazakhstan. It is a port city located on the northern shore of the Caspian Sea, in the delta at the mouth of the Ural River. Until 1992 it was called Guryev. In the mid-17th century Mikhail Guryev founded a fishing settlement, which soon became a Ural Cossack fortress. During the Soviet era, fishing and trade were the main economic activities. Later, industries such as oil refining, petrochemicals, canning, and ship repair were also established. There is a branch of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences, as well as a pedagogical university, museums, and theaters. It is connected to Orsk in Russia by rail. Population: 146,900 (1995 estimate). カザフスタン西部,アトゥラウ州の州都。カスピ海北岸,ウラル川河口の三角州に位置する港湾都市。 1992年までグリエフ Guryevと称した。 17世紀半ばミハイル・グリエフが漁業集落を建設,まもなくウラル・コサックの要塞となった。ソビエト連邦時代は漁業と貿易が経済活動の中心。その後製油,石油化学,缶詰,船舶修理などの工業も立地した。カザフスタン科学アカデミーの支部のほか,教育大学,博物館,劇場がある。ロシアのオルスクと鉄道で結ばれる。人口 14万 6900 (1995推計) 。
