In insects, this hormone stimulates the prothoracic gland to secrete ecdysone. It is abbreviated as BH. It was originally called brain hormone because it was secreted from the brain, but since it was discovered that the brain is an organ that secretes multiple types of hormones, it is now called prothoracicotropic hormone (or prothoracicotropin). It is a peptide or protein hormone, and several molecular species are known. In silkworms, it has a molecular weight of 4,300 and 23,000 daltons.
