According to legend, Melanthos, an immigrant from the Pylos royal family, became king of Athens in place of the native Athenian dynasty. One of his grandsons, Neleus, led a part of the expanding Athenian population to colonize Ionia by sea, and another, Medon, took over the Athenian throne. The descendants of Medon, or the Medon family, would later lead Athens in the Dark Ages, but it seems that important changes had already taken place in the form of monarchy at that early stage. …
