...Quality control itself originated in the United States, but in Japan it was linked to traditional collectivism, and interest in it has grown year by year since its introduction in major companies in 1962. Around 1970, the idea of company-wide quality control, which includes not only the manufacturing site but also non-manufacturing departments such as sales, planning, and general affairs, known as TQC (short for total quality control), spread, and QC circles began to be formed not only in manufacturing but also in tertiary industries such as banks.
