An old town in Aso County, northeastern Kumamoto Prefecture. It occupies the eastern part of the Aso Valley in the crater basin of Mt. Aso and the mountainous area of the outer rim of the volcano, with Ichinomiya, home to Higo Province's Ichinomiya Aso Shrine, at its center. Sakanashi was a former post station on the Bungo Kaido road. Rice is produced in the Aso Valley, and red cattle are bred. The town is connected by the Toyohashi Main Line and the Kyushu Transverse Highway, and the entire area is included in Aso-Kuju National Park. In February 2005, it merged with Aso Town and Namino Village in Aso County to become a city, forming Aso City. Area: 105.53 km2 . Population: 10,032 (2003). 熊本県北東部,阿蘇郡の旧町。阿蘇山の火口原阿蘇谷東部と外輪山の山地を占め,肥後国一宮阿蘇神社がある一の宮が中心。坂梨は豊後(ぶんご)街道の旧宿駅。阿蘇谷で米を産し,赤牛を飼育。豊肥本線,九州横断道路が通じ,全域阿蘇くじゅう国立公園に含まれる。2005年2月阿蘇郡阿蘇町,波野村と合併し市制,阿蘇市となる。105.53km2。1万32人(2003)。
