The second king of the 12th Dynasty of ancient Egypt. Reigned from 1971 BC to 1928 BC. Son of Amenemhat I, the founder of the dynasty. After 10 years of co-ruling with his father, Amenemhat I's father was assassinated during a campaign in Libya, but Amenemhat I quickly resolved the situation and established the foundations of the dynasty with his skillful political power. In order to secure the newly discovered gold mines, Amenemhat conquered Lower Nubia up to the second cataract of the Nile, built a fortress at Buhen to defend the southern border, and revived trade with Syria. He built temples in various parts of the country, including Heliopolis, Karnak, and Fayoum, and sent expeditions to the Sinai Peninsula, Aswan, and the Eastern Desert to quarry stone.
