【dance】
Ainu dances are classified into two types: gymnastic dances that originated from magical marches to scare away evil spirits, and mimetic dances that originated from costume dance dramas performed by shamans disguised as gods during festivals. (1) Niwen-apkas (rough walking): When something unusual happens in the village, the men, led by the village elder, draw their swords and shout in a loud voice, "Hu-oh hum! Hu-oh hum!", while the women follow behind them, brandishing their staffs and shouting in thin, shrill voices, "Hoi! Hoi!", in a single file file, stepping firmly on the ground with each step to scare away evil spirits. (2) Tapkar (dance) At a banquet, when the excitement is at its height, the elders of the troupe stand and perform this dance. They stretch out their arms to the sides, palms facing up, and slightly bend their elbows. They then move them up and down gently, stepping firmly on each step and taking several steps diagonally to the side, before repeating the same movement and returning to their original position.
