A fishing port town on the bay of the same name in the Tyrrhenian Sea on the north coast of Sicily in southern Italy. Population 13,348 (1981). It was formerly the port of the Greek colonial city of Segesta. Its main industries are textiles and fish processing. It is thought that the town was named after the fortress (castello) with its cylindrical tower jutting out into the sea (mare). The fortress can be seen from the ruins of Segesta, 3 km inland from the town. [Mochizuki Kazushi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
