Around 1321-91
Saint and founder of the Troitse-Sergiev Lavra, a representative monastery in Russia. In 1336 he retired to the Radonezh Forest (now Sergiev Posad) near Moscow, and around 1340 he established a monastery and spread the idea of monastic life in inter-residence throughout Russia. In opposition to the Mongol rule, known as the "Tatar yoke," he appealed for the Russian principalities to stop fighting and unite under Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy of Moscow. [Tatsuya Moriyasu]

ロシアの代表的修道院トロイツェ･セルギエフ大修道院の創立者，聖人。1336年にモスクワに近いラドネシの森(現，セルギエフ･ポサード)に隠棲し，40年ごろ修道院を開き，共住制修道生活の理念をロシア全土にひろめた。モンゴル人の支配，いわゆる〈タタールのくびき〉に対しては，ロシアの諸公国が争いをやめ，モスクワ大公ドミトリー･ドンスコイのもとに結集することを訴えた。【森安達也】
