Auto Race - Auto Race

This is a public gambling event in which winning tickets are sold for small motor vehicles with engines of 1500cc or less. Inspired by a track race at Tamagawa Speedway in 1949 (Showa 24), which attracted an audience of about 30,000 people, it was first held in Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture in October 1950. It is officially recognized by the Small Motor Vehicle Racing Law (Law No. 208 of 1950), but races with four-wheeled vehicles were abolished in 1973, and currently only track races with motorcycles with cylinder volumes of 663cc or less are held. In general races, eight cars compete for victory by making six laps on a paved track of 500 meters, but distance handicaps are applied in 10-meter increments depending on the driver's driving skills, the size of the cylinder capacity, and previous results. In other words, cars that are not subject to handicaps are placed on a fixed starting line, and are positioned backwards in order of handicap difference and start at the same time. The main factors in predicting the winner are the condition of each car's engine, the skill of the riders, and guessing which car will break away and which will catch up, and this is also where the interest of the race lies. In other competitive events, there are open races where all the cars stand at a fixed starting line, but handicap races are the mainstream. The motorcycles used are classified into Class 1 (513cc or more), Class 2 (512cc or less), and Class 3 (359cc or less), and all of them have different appearances and performances from ordinary motorcycles, such as not having brakes.

Auto racing tracks are located in five locations: Kawaguchi City (Saitama Prefecture), Hamamatsu City (Shizuoka Prefecture), Iizuka City (Fukuoka Prefecture), Sanyo Onoda City (Yamaguchi Prefecture), and Isesaki City (Gunma Prefecture). The organizers of the events are the five local governments of Kawaguchi City, Hamamatsu City, Iizuka City, Sanyo Onoda City, and Isesaki City. The competitions are conducted by the small car racing associations of each prefecture on behalf of the public organizations, and are supervised by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Each track holds 12 races per year, and each race is generally held for nine days. As of July 2017, there were 379 registered racers. In fiscal year 2016, the number of visitors to auto racing tracks nationwide was approximately 1.53 million, and sales were approximately 65.4 billion yen. The profits from these sales are allocated and used for the purpose of improving local finances and promoting the small car and other machinery industries.

気筒容積1500cc以下の発動機を有する小型自動車競走を対象に、勝車投票券を発売して行われる公営ギャンブル競技。1949年（昭和24）多摩川スピードウェイのトラックレースに約3万人の観衆が集まったのをヒントに、翌1950年10月千葉県船橋市で初めて開催された。「小型自動車競走法」（昭和25年法律208号）により公認されているが、1973年四輪車による競走は廃止され、現在実際に行われているのは、気筒容積663cc以下のオートバイによるトラックレースのみである。一般のレースは、1周500メートルの舗装走路を、8車が6周して勝敗を競うが、選手の操縦技量、気筒容積の大小、それまでの成績などにより、10メートル単位の間隔の距離ハンディキャップがつけられる。すなわち、ハンディキャップを課せられない車を定スタートラインに置き、ハンディ差順に後方に退いて位置させて同時にスタートさせる。各車のエンジンの調子や選手の技術、それに、どの車が逃げてどの車が追い込むかの推理が勝車予想の主体で、またレースの興味もそこにある。このほかの競技種目では、全車が定スタートラインに位置して行うオープンレースもあるが、ハンディキャップレースが主流である。使用されるオートバイは、1級車（513cc以上）、2級車（512cc以下）、3級車（359cc以下）に区別され、いずれもブレーキ装置がないなど一般のオートバイとは外観・性能とも異なっている。

　オートレース場の所在地は、川口市（埼玉県）、浜松市（静岡県）、飯塚(いいづか)市（福岡県）、山陽小野田市（山口県）、伊勢崎(いせさき)市（群馬県）の5か所で、開催の主催者は、川口市、浜松市、飯塚市、山陽小野田市、伊勢崎市の5地方公共団体である。競技の実施は、公共団体から委託を受けて各県の小型自動車競走会が行い、経済産業省が監督にあたっている。開催日数は1競走場当り年間12回で、1回の開催日数は9日間が原則となっている。登録選手は2017年7月時点で379名。2016年度の全国のオートレース場の入場者は約153万人、売上げは約654億円であった。これらの売上げの収益金は地方財政の健全化、小型自動車等機械工業の振興などを目的に配分使用されている。
