A shrimp of the family Penaeidae that lives near the coasts of warm seas, it has many small blue spots on a pale blue background (illustration). In some regions it is called akahige because of its red antennae. It is found in abundance on muddy bottoms at depths of 10 to 30 meters in Tokyo Bay, the Seto Inland Sea, and the Ariake Sea, and is also found in the East China Sea, Yellow Sea, and South China Sea. It reaches a body length of 15 cm, but males are slightly smaller. The carapace is irregularly bumpy and covered with stiff hairs. The rostrum is straight with 7 to 9 spines on the upper edge. The spawning season is from late June to September, and young shrimp about 2 cm long appear on the tidal flats from mid-July to October.

暖海の沿岸近くにすむ甲殻綱クルマエビ科のエビで，淡青色の地に青色の小斑点が多数ある（イラスト）。触角が赤いため，地方によってはアカヒゲと呼ぶ。東京湾，瀬戸内海，有明海などの水深10～30mの泥底に多く，東シナ海，黄海，南シナ海にも分布する。体長15cmに達するが，雄はやや小さい。頭胸甲は不規則なでこぼこで，硬い毛がある。額角はまっすぐで，上縁に7～9本のとげがある。産卵期は6月下旬から9月で，体長が2cmほどの稚エビが7月中旬から10月に干潟に現れる。
