A state (land) in the southeastern corner of Austria. Its area is 3,965 km2 and its population was 275,000 (1995). It is located in the western part of the Hungarian Plain. Its flat terrain is mostly fertile arable land, and in addition to wheat and sugar beets, grapes and fruit trees are cultivated extensively, and Burgenland wine is famous. Lake Neusiedl, which separates the state from Hungary, is the largest lake in Austria, and is long and narrow, measuring 30 km north to south and 6 to 12 km east to west. The lake surface changes with the seasons.
