Sailor suit - Sailor fuku

Japanese:
Sailor suit - Sailor fuku
In Japan, the term can mean either a sailor blouse or a sailor suit. The former was originally the uniform of British and American naval ensign candidates and naval academy students. It is generally a loose overblouse made of thick white cotton twill or dense cotton cloth, with a dark blue woolen sailor collar that hangs down the back and two or three white cotton braids. It is also called a midi blouse. A sailor suit is a combination of this with trousers, shorts or a skirt. This design was applied to the school uniform of Queen Victoria's prince in the 1850s. It was later adopted by American schools and athletes, and was also used in women's clothing. In the 1910s and 1920s, it was popular to combine it with a skirt. In Japan, it was introduced as a school uniform for female students around 1918, and navy blue, black or maroon serge for winter and thick cotton for summer became popular along with pleated serge skirts. The uniqueness of this style has been applied in a variety of other ways and has also become a source of inspiration for women's clothing design.
