Zeravshan River (English spelling)

Japanese: ゼラフシャン[川]（英語表記）Zeravshan

A river in Central Asia, straddling the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan. It is called Zaravshon in Uzbek. It is 877 km long and has a drainage area of 17,700 km2. It originates from the Zeravshan Glacier on Mount Igla (5,301 m) in Tajikistan, flows westward along a fault line valley, forms a large alluvial fan near Penjikent, and emerges into the plain. It branches off near Samarkand, then merges with the other rivers, disappearing into the desert near Karakul, downstream of Bukhara. The middle and lower reaches of the river are a complex network of oases, and reservoirs have been built in Katta-Kurgan and elsewhere.
