Arao River

A river that flows through northwest Miyagi Prefecture. It is the upper reaches of the Eai River, a tributary of the Kitakami River. It flows counterclockwise from the eastern foot of Mt. Arao (992 meters), enters the Onikobe Basin, passes through Naruko Dam, merges with the Oya River, and flows into the Osaki Plain near Iwadeyama in Osaki City. In 1958 (Showa 33), the Naruko Dam was built between Onikobe and Naruko as a multipurpose dam for flood control and other purposes. The dam is an arch type, 94.5 meters high and 215 meters long. The artificial Arao Lake is a long and narrow lake about 3 kilometers long, and is a popular tourist destination. There are many hot springs in the river basin, including Kawatabi, Naruko, Nakayamadaira, Mitaki, Todoroki, Fukiage, and Miyazawa, and they form the Tamatsukuri Onsenkyo Prefectural Park. The Otani River forms a gorge called Naruko Gorge, which is a scenic spot for viewing autumn leaves.

宮城県北西部を流れる川。北上川の支流江合川(えあいがわ)の上流部をいう。荒雄岳（992メートル）の東麓(とうろく)から逆時計回りに環流し鬼首(おにこうべ)の盆地に入り、鳴子(なるこ)ダムを経て、大谷川(おおやがわ)と合流し、大崎(おおさき)市岩出山(いわでやま)付近からは江合川となり大崎平野に出る。1958年（昭和33）鬼首―鳴子間に、洪水調節など多目的ダムの鳴子ダムが建設された。ダムはアーチ式で、高さ94.5メートル、長さ215メートル。人工湖の荒雄湖は約3キロメートルの細長い湖で行楽地となっている。流域には川渡(かわたび)、鳴子、中山平(なかやまだいら)、神滝(みたき)、轟(とどろき)、吹上(ふきあげ)、宮沢など温泉が多く、玉造温泉郷県立公園(たまつくりおんせんきょうけんりつこうえん)となっている。大谷川は峡谷をなし鳴子峡とよばれ、紅葉の景勝地である。
