1808‐83 A German liberal politician and cooperative organizer. He realized the seriousness of the "social problem" during the 1848 revolution, and thereafter worked to provide relief to impoverished craftsmen through the cooperative movement. The guiding principle of his cooperative was "self-help" through mutual solidarity among members, and he was notable for rejecting the old guild system and state aid. His debate with Lassalle over this issue is famous. [Sakai Eihachiro] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
