A German liberal politician and cooperative organizer. He realized the seriousness of the "social problem" during the 1848 revolution, and thereafter worked to provide relief to impoverished craftsmen through the cooperative movement. The guiding principle of his cooperative was "self-help" through mutual solidarity among members, and he was notable for rejecting the old guild system and state aid. His debate with Lassalle over this issue is famous. [Sakai Eihachiro]

ドイツの自由主義の政治家で協同組合の組織者。1848年の革命で〈社会問題〉の重大性を知り，以後協同組合運動を通じて窮乏手工業者の救済に努めた。彼の組合の指導理念は組合員の相互連帯による〈自助〉で，その際古いギルド制度を否定するとともに，国家の援助をも否定したことが特徴である。これについての彼とラサールとの論争は有名。【坂井栄八郎】
