A Russian writer. While working as a railway engineer, he sympathized with the Narodnik movement and traveled to various rural areas. Based on his experiences, he wrote novels about the lives of peasants living in traditional communities. Rural Landscape (1894) is one of his representative works. His autobiographical tetralogy, Choma's Childhood (1892), The Junior High School Student (1893), The University Student (1895), and The Engineer (1907), which depict the fate of intellectuals living in a time of change, were highly praised by Gorky. He traveled frequently to East Asia, including China, Manchuria, and Korea, and wrote travelogues such as Korea, Manchuria, and the Liaodong Peninsula (1899) and A Journey Around the World (1902), in which he criticized the deeply rooted notion of the inferiority of the yellow race at the time and praised the talent and diligence of the Oriental peoples.
